We Know They Lied – Published In DissidentVoice.org

#FreeAssangeNow #SayHisName #NoJusticeNoPeace #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd #NotMeUs

“We Know They Lied” tackles the devastation wrought by a corporate duopoly disguised as political parties in the U.S. – false wars driven by greed and avarice; a decimated middle class; and, a justice system that is of, by and for elites. A system that is racist, regressive and punitive for nothing more than profit and control! We must #StopTheAbuse of the American people, and in turn the world – the struggle begins at home!…

“We Know They Lied”
Words & Music by Steve Scott

Shadows stalk the cross
Crescent moon’s on fire
Victims of lies
Angels come to die
Families blown to hell
Children cry alone
Dogs roam these dark streets
Innocence long gone

We know they lied
They know they lied to us again
We know they lied
Does no one love me?

Hypnotized by greed
Trample those in need
Poverty denied
Dis-occupy divide
Pressures beat the drum
Plenty more to come
Packaged in a lie
Banksters all deny

We know they lied
They know they lied to us again
We know they lied
Does no one love me?

Authority and fear
Police state’s all in gear
Resist’s another lie
Cause for you to die
Loved ones on the ground
What the hell’s goin’ down
The devil and his guns
Got you on the run

We know they lied
They know they lied to us again
We know they lied
Does no one love me?

No Love For the Common Man REVIEW- Paul McGee (Lonesome Highway, Ireland)

July 23, 2020

Here is a musician who stands up for what he believes in. His website claims a roots music influence and his stated colours are those of Rust Belt Country, a term that was created to describe the urban decline in American cities impacted by the loss of jobs in a variety of manufacturing industries and beyond.

His music is also in the space of contemporary folk as his social message hits against the corporate and political greed that impacts upon the lives of so many working-class families. Based in Detroit, he has witnessed first-hand, the protracted decline in the city, caused by many factors, chief among which was the fall of the auto industry as a major employer in what was famously called the ‘Motor City.’

Scott is not a Trump supporter to put it mildly. We Know They Lied is an angry song on this EP and it hits out at the lack of care or interest shown in the plight of the citizens of Detroit. Indeed, in 2013, Detroit became the largest U.S. city to be declared bankrupt with $18.5 billion debt and the mayor sentenced to hard time for corruption and racketeering charges. Since then, efforts have been made to tackle the issues caused by thousands of empty buildings around the city.

Songs like Livin’ On Love and Time Waits For No One ask questions about the reality of daily survival and whether love itself is enough to sustain. Final song, I Think About You, is aimed towards one who perhaps got out and went elsewhere to create a new reality.

The musicians on this EP are quite superb in bringing these tunes into full technicolour. Scott plays acoustic guitar and mandolin, in addition to contributing lead vocals. The superb playing of David Mosher on fiddle and mandolin is a highlight on a number of tracks, as is the impassioned backing vocals of Kristin VonBernthal. Todd Glass on drums, together with John Barron on both electric and upright bass run the engine room with great authority and verve, while the guitars of both Garret Bielaniec and Tiziano Scott add plenty of nuance to the arrangements. Add in some fine accordion from Mark Iannace and banjo from Dave Feeny to brighten the mix and you have a very enjoyable six tracks of artistic endeavour.

Produced and written by Steve Scott, with studios in both Detroit and Ireland utilised, this third release sees an artist fully focused on delivering quality – even down to the excellent packaging that includes a yellow ‘police line do not cross’ ribbon and cover art that superimposes riot police imagery on the soldiers arresting the principal figures in the painting,The Taking of Christ, by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio – presumably for public order violations! A true reflection of the times we now find ourselves surrounded by!

Steve Scott for the first time on “Music on The Couch” with Vinny Marini

May 11, 2020

PHILADELPHIA – May 11, 2020 – Tonight, Steve Scott will be talking about his new release with Vinny Marini host of Music on the Couch  at 11:15 PM EDT.

No Love for the Common Man (released on Jan. 20th, 2020) is a traditional theme album which explores the harsh-realities and vicissitudes of common folk in America.

Steve calls it “music with a conscience!” And he asks, “What the hell happened?” Quoting the famed Economist, Dr. Richard Wolff, who says, “In the ’50s and ’60s Folk, Country, Blues and Pop Music were the literature of opposition…” Wolff goes on to say, “why not today!?”

“We Know They Lied” tackles the abuse and devastation wrought by a corporate duopoly disguised as political parties in the U.S. – false-wars driven by avarice and greed; a routed middle-class; and, a corrupted system of justice and inequality that is fostered by the elite.

“Rise” (Detroit!) is a “people’s anthem” celebrating the great city of Detroit and the love its music has given us all! This tune addresses the widely publicized cruelty inflicted on this great American city shamelessly hollowed out by vulture-capitalism. A working-class populace  forgotten and left behind that has produced a musical tradition,n so unique, that it has profoundly affected the soul of not only America, but the world!

“Wish You Well” is a timeless track that immediately grabs the listener with its distinctively powerful approach to a traditional sound:  This tune slams head-on into the issues of drug-addiction and poverty in rural America; and, the epic despair that has befallen a discarded, hard working and proud population.

Also, you’ll find sweet sounding roots-music-treasures like “Livin’ On Love,” “Time Waits For No One” and “I Think About You” which explore the inward and outward emotional fragility of the human condition within the working-class.

No Love for the Common Man: Recorded at Rowanstown Studio Maynooth, Ireland and Tempermill Studio Detroit, Michigan. Produced by Steve Scott. Engineered by David Feeny and Tizi Scott. All tracks mixed by multi Grammy Award winner Carl Glanville (of U2 fame) NYC. All tracks mastered by renowned audio-engineer Marcel James Culver City, CA. All songs written and arranged by Steve Scott.

Steve Scott is a singer/songwriter, humanist/activist, record producer and actor – a self-taught musician, writer and performer. He uses American Roots Music, a blend of influences including Country, Soul, Rock, Rhythm and Blues, Bluegrass and Folk to illustrate the current American social and political landscape. In his music, Steve expresses what he calls the “wrenching torment” of common folk: abuse, neglect, regret, struggle, sacrifice, love and loss!

We were impressed with Steve Scott‘s (then he went by the moniker Steve Scott Country) Those Tears I’ve Cried a while back. No Love For The Common Man (released this January ) sees a change of direction with less twang and cowboy aesthetic, but packing an emotional punch with some serious subject matter. And there’s that irresistible voice – a wonderful clarion call.

STEVE SCOTT: NO LOVE FOR THE COMMON MAN | Keysandchords.com

March 5, 2020

As a humanist and activist, Steve Scott pushes the truth out front for all to see: he points to rotten politics, a corrupt justice system and wealth inequality within today’s America. He himself may not have imagined winning the Detroit’s Music Awards, but it was his turn in 2014, with the album “Those Tears I Cried.” His entire life has been about bringing awareness to social issues, a reality-check if you will. In his new EP “No Love For The Common Man” he speaks of the common folk, the working class. His style is somewhat reminiscent of ’60s protest songs, but he uses contemporary Americana music to bring it home.

His new EP includes six songs, two of which we have to highlight: “We Know They Lied” attacks the political economy with a powerful voice and rhythm, a protest song that has hit potential – with an angry sounding fiddle that cries out for justice. In “Livin’ On Love ” he asks us “in this hard cold world, can anybody live on love?”. Of course not, but must that be the case?

This gem comes with a beautiful shiny fold-out cover with a protest scene on the front page inspired by the painter Michelangelo Merisi de Caravaggio. And around the case a yellow police ribbon with the text “police line do not cross”. The attack on the justice system cannot be clearer!

Steve Scott – No Love For The Common Man | ROOTSTIME.BE

February 18, 2020

In 2012, the debut album “Shinin’ Like You Do” by American singer [songwriter and producer] Steve Scott from Detroit, Michigan was released. He presented thirteen songs in which rock, bluegrass and country music were integrated in their own unique way. One year later we received a successor here at “Rootstime” in the form of the album “Those Tears I´ve Cried” [with six new tracks including five] of the country rock songs that were also on that debut album [remixed and re-mastered, by Al Sutton of Kid Rock fame].

Many years later in the year 2020 we received his most recent realization in the form of a six-song EP entitled “No Love For The Common Man”, [motivated by] a quote from Noam Chomsky, the American Jewish linguist, philosopher, media critic and political activist. The songs on this album are also inspired by the political, psychological and economic reality of the United States. [Carl Glanville of U2 fame mixed the EP.]

The opening [song] “Rise (Detroit!)” heard on the first track is an ode to the American city that has delivered so much beautiful music to the world, but has now fallen victim to shameless capitalism that has brought down their entire industry. In the song “Wish You Well” that can be heard on the [album’s second] video, Steve Scott talks about the problem of drug addiction and poverty in rural America, which has also affected a large part of the population of [middle America including the] state of Michigan.

Song number three “We Know They Lied” is of course about [an American political system that is] driven by greed and lust for power, and, [that] tolerates racism and inequality between the American people and manages to maintain a corrupt legal system [based on] lies. With that we have had the first three songs of this EP.

Fortunately, Steve Scott has also created space for three simple love songs on this album because love also remains very important in [this] current tough society. Those “love songs” [include] the folky song “Time Waits For No One”, the melancholic “Livin’ On Love” and the album-closing song “I Think About You”.

The six tracks composed by Steve Scott were recorded [in Dublin Ireland and Detroit, Michigan]. He also took on the role of producer. We do not know for sure whether this EP will be the harbinger of a future full-cd, but if so, then you will undoubtedly be able to hear it again in due time via “Rootstime”.

Listen to No Love For The Common Man – Tom Haugen (TakeEffectReviews)

January 27, 2020

Steve Scott is a man who wears many hats, and here he takes a break from activism, acting, writing and producing to flesh out a quick listen of roots sounds where country, folk, soul and blues are all part of the warm, flowing equation.

“Rise” starts the EP strong with Scott’s fluid and wise vocals alongside country and soul sounds in the anthemic tune about Detroit, and “Wish You Well” follows with a more firm country spirit as rootsy melodies are worked into the timeless setting.

The back half of the listen includes the backing vocals and fiddle work of “Time Waits For No One”, while “Livin’ On Love” finds a more cautious place to reside with a lush, rural approach. “I Think About You” ends the listen on a high note, as folk qualities enter the formula with immediately memorable results.

Scott’s lyrical prowess is just as well executed as his music, as he addresses political and social issues with insightful commentary, and his smooth, expressive pipes really help illuminate his unique and absorbing brand of Americana.
